Not only was the Waddington Wealth Management Group created two years ago, but this also marks my tenth year in the industry, all of which have been with Canaccord Genuity. Starting in the back office and quickly moving to the retail side of the business where I could better use my skills to help clients.
After almost 7 years as an Associate Investment Advisor, I decided in 2016 that it was time for me to venture out and start my own team and I can say that it has been the best decision of my professional life. Although running my own team has come with plenty of challenges and stress, the freedom and flexibility to do things my way has far outweighed any negatives. Controlling my schedule has allowed me to join the boards or great organizations like the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, New West Hospice Society and Royal City Rotary Club. It has also allowed me to attend my boy’s kindergarten orientation, preschool graduation and to volunteer as his lacrosse coach.
This flexibility was also nice when we welcomed our third boy, Caden, into the world on New Year’s Eve. I was able to support my wife as we transitioned to life as a family of 5 by working from home, while my team supported myself and our wonderful clients.
I believe I said that year one was extremely busy but that was nothing compared to the last 12 months. I am so thankful for my clients because they have really driven my growth since I began. Our business has grown by over 80% in the last year and we could not have done that without our wonderful clients referring us friends, family and anyone else they believe could use good, honest advice about their finances.
From the start, I have adopted the business model that if you look after your clients and do what is in their best interest, your clients will in turn take care of you. I am so pleased to report that this model is working because I am not sure how I would build a business any other way.
As much as I try to make the big events in my kid’s lives (like Pre-school graduation), our household would not still be standing if it wasn’t for my wife, Liz. She continues to not only support me by taking care of our boys and pretty much all the household duties, but she is also able to emotionally support me through the ups and downs of running a business. She is a sounding board, therapist and the best partner for me.
This next part is stolen from my year 1 recap but it is just as true now as it was then…
It has been a wonderfully busy year and I will always look back on it fondly. With that said, I am looking forward to what year two three has to offer. I am looking forward to working and growing with my clients. I am look forward to meeting and helping new people. I am looking forward to contributing more to my community. Lastly, I am looking forward to summer!
Here a few highlights from year 2:

The older boys giving some love to their new baby brother.
A rare date night with my wife at the Rotary - Heart of the Matter Gala
Coaching AJ and 8 other 4-6 year olds was a definite highlight!
